Backlash & Contact Pattern

Why mounting distance, backlash and tooth contact must be evaluated together.

Backlash and contact are linked

Backlash is the operating clearance between mating teeth at the defined mounting position. Contact pattern shows where the teeth carry load across the face. Adjusting one mounting variable can change both.

Why mounting distance matters

Bevel gearing is sensitive to the axial position of the gear and pinion. Bearings, shims, housing dimensions and runout therefore influence contact and noise.

Bench and field validation

A controlled rolling or marking-compound pattern can help assess setup, but the final machine also depends on housing stiffness, load, temperature and lubrication. Record the approved setup for repeat maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Can backlash & contact pattern be developed from an existing sample?

A sample can support dimensional study, but the most reliable route also includes the mating member, shaft angle, mounting information, speed, torque, material or hardness information and failure history.

What information is required for quotation?

Provide a dimensioned drawing or sample, quantity, module or diametral pitch, tooth counts, pressure angle, spiral hand where applicable, ratio, material, heat treatment, accuracy requirement and expected duty.

Can one member be replaced without the mating gear or pinion?

It may be possible after inspection, but a matched-pair approach is normally preferred because tooth contact, backlash and mounting are interdependent.

How is delivery time determined?

Delivery depends on geometry, quantity, material availability, tooling, heat treatment, finishing, inspection scope and technical approval.
